For this session, I decided to set the mixer's USB send to the first four channels rather than the aux and main outs. The idea was that it would allow me to tweak the mix after recording. I ran the OP-Z through M1 and M2 and the Pico System III (which I used to mix the Eurorack devices down to line level) through M4.

This was a single track assembled entirely on my OP-Z. It started as an exercise in using variable-length steps and turned into...well, this.

Below is the initial export. I'm not entirely pleased with the mastering, but I don't have the proper vocabulary to express why or to tweak it to sound better. (I want to say it needs a compressor on the hats and some adjustments to the loudness normalization, but I'm not sure.)

This is the first recording to feature the Syntakt. I had been struggling to make it sing until I started playing with the Forbidden Planet, and that's when inspiration struck.

Much like the recordings of 2023-02-11, I used Pamela's Pro Workout to send the Plaits quantized random notes.

Synchronization

One particular challenge with the Bluebox is synchronization. While it has MIDI I/O, there is currently no way to tell the Bluebox to ignore MIDI STOP messages. In practice this means losing out on those delicious tails, which is a total waste! We need a way to filter out such messages so the recording doesn't stop prematurely.

Mutable Instruments Plaits

Note that Mutable Instruments has ceased operation as of December 2022, though they promise to provide support and repairs until June 2023.

I expected Plaits to be an overrated module, but I was (happily) very wrong about that. With its 16 synthesis modes (24 with firmware 1.3), CV control of all main parameters, adjustable internal envelope, and sub-oscillator, it packs enormous versatility into a small space. Factor in its impeccable aesthetics and open-source d…

A modulation multi-tool powerhouse. While this purchase was somewhat impulsive, it has been anything but regrettable.

4MS no longer sells this module fully assembled, but they do sell it in kit form. Since that sounded like my idea of a good time anyway, I went for it. And boy, did it live up to those expectations. Assembly was a straightforward but pleasantly challenging 8

Almost a complete modular system by itself. It has six voices (and six LFOs), stereo output, and a unique mechanism for maneuvering through its wavetables. A 12-voice drum synthesizer.

Tips

Elektron's LFO timings are at once opaque and yet strangely intuitive. LFO rates are specified in terms of two parameters: a speed and a multiplier. These quantities are related by the following formula$$\frac{128}{T_{steps}/16}=speed\cdot mult$$$T_{steps}=8$$speed\cdot mult=256$$mult=16$$speed=16$$T_{steps}=5$$speed\cdot mult=409.6$$mult=8$$speed=51.2$

Allen & Heath ZEDi 10

A 10-channel mixer with an embedded 4 in/4 out USB audio interface. This model does not include the onboard effects engine, but it does have two auxiliary sends (one of which is handily labeled “FX”). That's what the ZOIA is for, anyway. Much to my ridiculous delight, it also includes a single fader. The innards are apparently on discrete circuit boards as well.

A completely modular effects pedal --- or synthesizer, depending on how you use it. Permits stereo in/out (or two of each in mono) and CV in/out (configurable). The only limitations are imagination and CPU usage.
